About Unix Timestamps

A Unix timestamp (also called epoch time or POSIX time) is the number of seconds that have elapsed since January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC — known as the Unix epoch. It's the universal way to represent time in programming.

When Are Timestamps Used?

  • Database storage (created_at, updated_at fields)
  • API responses and request headers
  • Log file entries and event tracking
  • JWT token expiration (exp claim)
  • Cache control and HTTP headers

Seconds vs Milliseconds

Most Unix timestamps are in seconds (10 digits). JavaScript's Date.now() returns milliseconds (13 digits). This tool automatically detects the format.
